The beginning of a new school year brings a genuine assessment challenge. Teachers need to understand what pupils remember, what they have misunderstood and where support may be needed. At the same time, pupils are adjusting to new classrooms, new adults, unfamiliar routines and, in some cases, an entirely new school.
The answer is not to spend the first fortnight administering test after test.
A useful beginning-of-year baseline is not a single score collected on a particular morning. It is a developing picture of what a pupil can do, how securely they can do it and what might help them move forward. Much of that picture can be gathered through ordinary lessons, careful questioning, short low-stakes tasks and professional observation.

A baseline is more dependable when it develops over time. One piece of work may be affected by nerves, misunderstanding of the instructions or an unusually good or difficult day. Several smaller observations are more likely to reveal what is secure.
A teacher might collect evidence across the first two or three weeks using a simple rhythm:
- a short retrieval task at the beginning of a lesson;

Schools do not need a complicated framework. A simple three-week approach can provide enough structure while allowing pupils time to settle.
During the first week, review transition information, establish routines and use accessible tasks that let pupils talk, think and work independently. Note only major patterns, unexpected strengths and concerns requiring prompt follow-up.
During the second week, focus more closely on the prerequisite knowledge needed for upcoming units. Use short retrieval tasks, targeted questions and one or two independent pieces of work. Introduce a formal assessment only where it has a clear purpose.
During the third week, check whether early patterns remain. Compare different forms of evidence, speak with colleagues and pupils where necessary, and decide what should change in planning, support or challenge.
By the end of this period, teachers do not need a complete judgement about every aspect of every pupil. They need a sufficiently reliable picture to teach the class well and a clear plan for anything that still needs investigating.
